surely, there's more to this than meets the eye.
i was wondering-what if the situation is reversed? will the US give diplomatic immunity?

Probably not. The US has given diplomatic immunity to people for drunk driving and wife beating and so on, but not, to my knowledge, for shooting two people with an unlicensed gun while carrying around other weapons and cameras and espionage tools....
